Step 1: What classification best suits you?

Use the below chart to determine what classification best suits your outside State experience. If you are already or previously a State custodian, click on the hyperlinks below to see what State experience counts.

Custodian I 6 months of professional cleaning experience High School Diploma/GRE
Custodian II 1 year of professional cleaning experience 6 months of professional cleaning experience and High School Diploma/GRE
Custodian Supervisor I 2 years of professional cleaning experience

(1 year must include leading or directing)
18 months of professional cleaning experience and High School Diploma/GRE

(1 year must include leading or directing)
Custodian Supervisor II 4 years of professional cleaning experience

(2 years must include supervising or directing)
3 years, 6 months of professional cleaning experience and High School Diploma/GRE

(2 years must include supervising or directing)

Step 2: Create a CalCareers account.

Create a CalCareers account and complete your application template. Be sure to include all relevant experience.

Step 3: Take the exam.

You must now take and pass the exam for the classification you selected above:

For persons with a disability certified by The Department of Rehabilitation

If you qualify for more than one classification, you can take the exam for those classifications too.

Compensation

As a State employee within the Custodian series, you will be placed into your classification range and receive a 5% Merit Salary Adjustment increase each year on your work anniversary (dependent on performance) until you have reached the maximum salary for your classification.

The Custodian series, due to the nature of the position, also may receive a monthly stipend depending on if the position meets the requirements of the pay differential. The compensation below does not reflect this pay differential.

*Persons appointed to these classifications with CALPIA are eligible for Salary Range B, 10% higher than most other state agencies.
