CALPIA is a self-supporting, customer-focused business that reduces recidivism, increases prison safety, and enhances public safety by providing incarcerated individuals productive work and training opportunities. CALPIA achieves this vision by incarcerated individual development programs and opportunities which focus on reducing incarcerated individual recidivism.
Industry Employment Program (IEP)
The California Prison Industry Authority (CALPIA) developed the Industry Employment Program (IEP) in 2001 to enhance the ability of CALPIA participants to obtain meaningful jobs upon release, thus reducing recidivism and contributing to safer communities. CALPIA requires factory supervisors to prepare and evaluate job skills, experience, education, and work habits acquired by participants assigned to enterprises. IEP also offers a Transition to Employment Program which assists incarcerated individuals in obtaining required documents for employment and provides transitional services needed to find employment upon release.
Career Technical Education (CTE)
The California Prison Industry Authority (CALPIA) Career Technical Education (CTE) program is the first of its kind in the nation to partner an incarcerated individual rehabilitation program with trade unions, non-profit organizations, public entities, and private companies to meet the rehabilitative needs of offenders. To date, the CALPIA CTE program is one of the most effective correctional rehabilitation programs in California. By three years after release, only 9.5 percent of CALPIA CTE participants had been returned to custody.
